ATV Safety 101
Riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV, also known as a “quad” or “four-wheeler”) is a thrilling experience that allows you to venture off the beaten path and explore all types of terrain. However, there is an element of danger when it comes to riding ATVs, so you need to make sure that you’re being responsible. Here are our top safety tips for ATV riding.
Gear Up
You can’t ride an ATV without the proper gear. Because you’re on a vehicle that is riding over unpaved paths and rough terrain, and you are exposed to the open air and not using a seatbelt, you are at risk of being thrown from the vehicle in the event of a collision. That’s why wearing a crash-proof DOT-rated powersports helmet with either a pair of goggles or a full face mask is so important.
You should also wear riding gloves and boots, as well as close-fitting clothes made from sturdy fabric that cover your arms and legs. You don’t want to have any loose ties or drapes or long hair in your way, either.
Use Common Sense
When you ride your ATV, you need to be sober and alert, so don’t use any alcohol or drugs before you ride. You should also never ride when tired or sick, since you won’t be able to react as quickly. Try to avoid riding in the dark or during inclement weather conditions. Follow all posted trail signage and don’t stray off established paths.
Maintain Your Vehicle
Finally, it’s important to keep your ATV well-maintained so that it doesn’t break down on you when you’re out in the middle of nowhere. Change the oil, check the tires, and fill up your tank with gas so that you’re always prepared.
