Choosing an ATV

Types of ATVs
When it comes to ATVs, there are two main categories. Each of these categories is designed for a specific style of riding and have the features to match. Start you search by narrowing down your choices to one specific type of ATV.
Utility ATVs are the most common type out there. These machines look boxy and bulky and usually include cargo racks and two-up seats. In general, this kind of ATV is used for work projects. However, the durable construction of this vehicle makes it well-suited for trail riding too.
Sport ATVs are the other option. These are sleeker in design and have a better suspension system that will satisfy thrill seekers. This type of ATV is for entertainment purposes, not work. Looking for an adrenaline rush? Choose a sport ATV.
The Size
ATV models come in all different sizes. Compact options are better for navigating tight trails. Additionally, smaller models are lighter and offer more agility. If you opt for a larger model, you’ll get more power, storage space, and room for another passenger. After ensuring that the size meets your trail riding requirements, check that it also meets your ergonomic needs. Your ATV should be well-suited for your height to ensure that your riding experience is comfortable and you’re able to control your ATV. Try out a variety of sizes to find the one that fits you best.
Your Riding Level
Another factor to consider when buying an ATV is your riding level. Someone who is brand new to ATV riding will have much different needs than an experienced rider. Generally, the more experienced you are, the more options you’ll have to choose from. A novice rider will have limited options and should stick to less powerful engines (usually between 250 and 300 ccs). If your engine power is too high for your skill level, you can feel out of control and get in an accident. Newer riders will benefit from features like automatic CVT transmissions, keyed ignitions, and throttle limiters.
Terrain Type
Next, you’ll need to think about what terrain you’re going to ride on. This may sound counterintuitive considering what ATV stands for, but trust us. All ATVs can handle a large range of terrain, but a standard model is better equipped to handle compact dirt terrain. If you are going to be riding on looser terrain like sand or mud, you’ll want a more specialized model that won’t bog you down.
Transmission
ATVs come in both manual and automatic transmissions. Automatic transmissions are good for gentle riding and you’ll be able to drive up hills a lot easier. However, automatic transmissions don’t have the engine compression needed for going down steep hills. A manual transmission is preferred for utility ATVs since it will reduce the wear and tear on your ATV’s parts.
Budget
Of course, you’ll need to take your budget into account when buying an ATV. It’s a good idea to make a budget before looking at models. It’s far too easy to see a top-notch model and end up spending more than you can afford. If you stick to your budget, you’ll only see vehicles you can afford. Keep in mind that an ATV will need maintenance over the years, so take that into account when budgeting. Also include the cost of gear like a helmet into your ATV budget.
