As a responsible personal watercraft (PWC) owner, you probably do whatever you can to keep your watercraft in good working order. A major part of PWC upkeep is maintenance. In this post, we're going to briefly cover some tried and true methods for maintaining your machine so that it continues to give you joy. However, refer to your owner's manual first and foremost when you have questions about how to maintain your personal watercraft.

Change the Engine and Pump Oil

Change the engine and pump oil at least once a year. You may have to do it more often, depending on how much you ride your PWC. The best time to change the oil is at the beginning of the summer season. It's when you'll be using your PWC the most.

Also, make sure the fuel in your PWC’s tank is fresh and free of water. If it's been a while since you've ridden, make sure to add a fuel stabilizer to the tank. And, always add a fuel stabilizer before you store your PWC for the winter.

Flush Out the Water Cooling System

Always flush out the intake and water cooling systems of your PWC after a ride. This helps to ensure debris and standing water don't eventually wreak havoc upon your watercraft. Flushing out the system is even more critical if you ride in saltwater. The corrosiveness of the salt will eventually degrade the entire intake and cooling system. Commit to flushing the system every time you ride.

Store in a Dry Place

After riding your PWC, do not leave it in the water, tied to the dock. PWC aren't designed to be stored like this. Eventually, the water will delaminate the hull. Additionally, marine organisms such as barnacles and algae may begin to grow on your PWC's Hull. These organisms are not only unattractive, they are potentially damaging to the hull itself. Several manufacturers make storage docks that lift the PWC out of the water. Additionally, you can always load the craft back onto its trailer.

Keep Your Watercraft Clean

Don't forget to remove the plug from the rear of your PWC every time you ride it. This allows the water to drain out and helps to prevent corrosion if you were riding in saltwater. In freshwater, removing the drain plug also limits the growth of algae, mold, and other marine organisms. After the plug is removed, follow your manufacturer's instructions on what compartments need to be opened up and cleaned. Cleaning after every ride is just part of the ownership cost associated with a PWC. It’s always necessary.
